Acro Suites, Crete

here’s an ancient Greek word, “akros”, that means “on the edge” — and, goodness, Acro has taken the translation and run with it. Every one of its 49 suites and villas has a sea view and teeters on the edge of a cliff overlooking Mononaftis Bay on the north coast. It’s quite an engineering feat, where private pools (every room has one) seem to jut out over the Aegean Sea, and the curve of the wellness centre and its pools follow the crinkle-cut shape of the rock. The rooms are equally design-conscious, with some — the Cave Suites — built right into the rock and others with bare-stone surfaces, marble floors and vast glass walls. Details B&B doubles from £309 (acrosuites.com).
