Crete is the word.

Nestled on the rocky cliffside of Mononaftis Bay 30 minutes from Heraklion airport is Crete’s latest and tastiest hotel, Acro Suites. Commanding the coastline with state-of-the-art architecture impossibly cantilevered over a cliff directly above the sea, this five-star newcomer sells itself as the “perfect retreat”. This James Bond-esque escape has already attracted VIPs, celebrities and sybarites with enviable, private and extremely instagrammable suites. Everything here is beautiful, from the design notes to the endless views over the Aegean Sea—there’s a really special feeling here. If Santorini and The Maldives had a baby, we’re pretty sure this is what it would look like.

When each of the 49 suites has an Aegean-admiring terrace (all camouflaged into the craggy cliffside), you know you’ve stumbled upon a very good thing. The modern, super-sleek design throughout will get your inner interior designer swooning, with a palette of soft hues and natural earthy tones to calm the senses. Each suite has been meticulously designed to create serenity, simplicity and tranquillity. Stay in a Cave Suite for the rocky roof over a saltwater private pool, which comes with a fully-equipped bar and portable speakers—perfect for soaking up the last of the sun’s rays before getting ready for dinner.

Heading up the kitchens is culinary genius, Giannis Rokanas, who centres his food around fresh, seasonal and organic produce. “I respect the ingredients, minimise food waste, focus on flavour and am never afraid of experimenting,” he says of his ethos. The menu seems like it’s dreamt up by the gods, with addictive flavours, so if you’re lucky enough to be staying for a couple nights, you are guaranteed to leave with firm favourites (we’re still dreaming about those fries). Just make sure you also try the catch of the day, fresh pasta or the delicious desserts—which are all divine. The restaurant’s unique design, wholesome menu and unparalleled views guarantee a soulful gastronomic experience. Perfect for long lunches and lively dinners accompanied by a brilliant live band, we can safely say that Cremnos is the all-day destination for you. But for those who enjoy tantalising Asian flavours, Umi (which is a short golf buggy trip down to sister hotel, Seaside) serves up delectable Nikkei cuisine overlooking the sea. Not-to-miss dishes include the chef’s selection of sashimi and nigiri, and Giannis’ famous chicken bao bun—which was so good we swiftly ordered another, before we devoured the Dulce de leche for pudding.

As for drinks, there’s an all-day pool Bar & Lounge, The Circle, with an impressive cocktail and wine list that caters to all thirsts. Top tip: Ask George for his spicy margarita, and while away the evenings watching the most epic sunset. We did and it was fabulous.

The boutique’s astonishing Bath House will restore your body, mind and spirit. The authentic byzantine hammam taps into the concept of rejuvenation and purifying the soul (but be warned, it’s seriously hot). If you’re into fitness, the enchanting bamboo yoga “shala” is well worth a visit. Guests can choose from daily yoga and meditation classes, and different classes from qualified fitness instructors (who are ridiculously good-looking) to amplify their wellbeing experience. Among the calm, there’s a sense of wilderness to be found here; in the sea-bound steps carved into the rocky ridge, the wafts of lavender and thyme that linger on the back of the Aegean breeze, and the three resident goats that wander through the gardens—occasionally popping into view from all angles.

Being brand new, Acro Suites can’t rely on a reputation just yet, but it’s clearly already drawing those in-the-know. The crowd here is mainly couples, all very discreet and appreciative, and fitness fanatics dressed in lululemon. But the best bit? No children. V.F. spoke to Michelis and he laughed at the thought: “How else would you actually relax”?

As they are now well into their first full season, it’s not hard to see why it’s already fully-booked until September. V.F. rebooked before we got in the taxi to the airport—next May can’t come soon enough.
